Brooks took the phone and listened while Mattie told him what had happened. He thanked her and hung up. After that day, neither Jane Ann Thompson nor Mattie Johnson ever rode a city bus again. During his first three years as a porter, Nixon logged nearly four hundred hours, or 11,000 miles a month, making sixty dollars a month plus tips. “Now and then a satisfied passenger, happy with his freshly polished shoes and tight bedding in his berth, would flip a dime my way, but that was indeed a rarity,” he remembered.
