My own body is known to me in the same way as all other material objects, as something that occupies time and space (in Schopenhauer’s terms, as Vorstellung or Idea), but I also have immediate, non-sensory knowledge of it from within, in the form of appetency: those primal sensations of longing, hunger, fearing, desire, and aversion, including the action of the bodily organs, which Schopenhauer identifies as the will to life. While it is only of myself that I can know directly that I have both an external and an interior existence, I can infer that the whole phenomenal world, even inorganic or seemingly inert matter, exists in the same two aspects, as both an object of perception and an expression of the blind, ceaseless urging that Schopenhauer denotes the Will.
