It is hurtful to brush their opinion and feelings aside, and it is rude to reject their gift. Being gracious in your response will make both of you feel good. It can be a surprise to discover through a third party, that these people actually think a lot of them. It would radically change all your relationships for the better if others heard directly from you that you supported and appreciated them. You could begin this process by telling someone how much you admire their actions or accomplishments. If you are not in the habit of saying how much you appreciate others, your first efforts might feel a little awkward. Keep it simple. Identify the thing you admire or appreciate, and then say it.

If you want to be effective about changing others you need to think carefully about the problem. You need to consider what you can change about both the external environment and your own attitude. For example, if you want your adult children to take a turn at cooking, make the kitchen a pleasant place, and have a positive attitude towards them and towards cooking.
